I bought this version to have something to play while in waiting rooms. I already bought it on the switch 2, but I didn't want to bring a whole switch with me. this is my preferred version. I grew up playing Gameboy and Gameboy advance games, so games with pixel graphics like this just feel more natural to me on a smaller device. even though I've loved the final fantasy series for 15 years and gotten very far into many of the games, this is the first FF game I have defeated the final boss in.

Overall, it's a great version of the game. There are a lot of QoLs for mobile so you know that they put a lot of thought into making it a great experience. I was a little apprehensive at the updated sprites at first, but after playing for a while now I think I'm on board. I really wish there was an option for a different font and I REALLY can't understand why the extra content wasn't included in this version. I don't buy the "keeping it close to the original" explanation. Hopefully it'll get released in an update... I also wish the bestiary was accessible in-game instead of only at the menu.

Things I like: auto battle, music, graphics, quick save, tap to move, item shops. Things I don't like: diagonal movement, slow battle speed, klunky sorting & battle menus, why remove the tough monsters from the peninsula near Provoka? Lose progress if app closes w/o save. The previous remake flowed much smoother. Why they couldn't just slap a pretty new skin and functional design on the previous remake? I feel like they made it look pretty but stepped backwards in game play/functionality.

The game looks and plays really well. However, it requires an internet connection to boot the game, which was an issue with the old FF mobile ports. Hopefully Square decides to remove the requirement for a connection as it partially defeats the purpose of the game being on mobile. If this was removed, it would be one of the best FF1 ports. I really wanted to love this. Zero controller support on Android for using Xbox controller or Bluetooth keyboard. On screen controls, not surprisingly, are unbearable. And to top it all off I can't even use my stylus? A stylus would make this so much better for moving around. The on-screen menu buttons are just all over the place on both sides of the screen. There's no comfortable ergonomic way to play this game. Both hands on both sides of the phone and no alternative. I just expect more.
