While full of amazing content, the app is ephemeral when one switches away to another app. Substack disappears from the app switcher, even losing one's place in the current article. If you don't immediately like an article there is no history to help you find the same article, leaving you lost from something you might want to continue reading. It's almost better to open an article in a browser tab to make sure the article doesn't get lost forever. Edited

There's a really annoying bug where if the app isn't already 'open' in the "recent apps" list and you open it from a notification and then switch to another app, Substack will not appear in the recent apps screen. This is very counterproductive to multitasking and using the app in general. When this happens, I have to reopen the app fresh and then search for the post I was viewing. Can you fix this please? PLEASE FIX THE EPISODE AUDIO!!! You are failing your creators. Newer updates have ruined the podcast audio experience for users. I'm constantly having to close and restart the playback on the clips. Also, please restore the ability to open an audio clip as a full page instead of this nonsense you've forced on users. There is only a tiny sliver of a bar with controls on the bottom of the screen during audio playback. Basically, take us back to the old version and this app will be 5/5 again. Edited

This app is awful. I love substack, and the idea behind it, but the android app has been drowning in bugs for years. And it hasn't improved at all. In browser on mobile, it malfunctions in a whole different set of ways. Update 2026: App is still horrifically bad. Edited

Would be a solid app, but years after launch, I still can't even read a footnote in the app without scrolling to the bottom and back up to where I was, every time. Clicking the footnote doesn't work. Please fix basic bugs before launching new features 🙏 BTW, comments would also be more useful/navigable if I could filter for comments where the author responded or liked it. Edited
