I would have given this a 4 or 5 until this update. I've enjoyed playing casually. I understand that they need to make some money off those of us that don't buy their packages - but the ads that pop up now are beyond tolerable. If it was just the initial ad with a timer, okay fair, but then you're rolled over to another screen from which the only possible action is to do their desired action, usually to go to the store download the advertised app. Eventually you get an X to click out if you go back and forth, or maybe it's on another invisible timer. I'm going to finish out the one race I'm in now (if I don't lose my patience first), but unless that behavior changes I'm done with Virtual Regatta.

I recommend only using a computer with a stable internet connection for this. That is fun and I have had no problems. Don't bother with the mobile app. The mobile app uses tons of battery even in the background. When you use the mobile app to make changes to your course, or other changes, and go back later the changes you have made are gone. It never gives a notice if it is having trouble communicating with the servers so you can take some action. This has bad consequences on your race. Edited

Update Nov 2022: obnoxious ads, unable to play game until after watching it. Update Jan 2021: Horrible experience now. Keeps disconnecting while trying to play. If you can't handle additional traffic/players, just bring me to the basic functions. It's super annoying anyway that I have to watch the 3D view and my complete trajectory since the race started before I can get to what I actually want to do when connecting. Edited

Overall, I like the app. It is a big improvement over earlier versions. The reason for less than 5 Stars is that the main playing page only connects to the actual race 50% of the time - or maybe even less. That is frustrating and can foul up the whole game play/ strategy. It REALLY needs fixing!!!

Enjoyable game that requires some sailing knowledge as well as pay to play upgrades to be very successful, but still fun without any real sailing know-how at all or $$ invested. Be warned, races are real time with a set start date & time so some last for many days and if you aren't careful, you can get way behind in a hurry. I wish there was the ability to have 3-4 waypoints instead of just 2 for free. Many races start at 05:00 our time and it's very easy to run off course with just 2 presets
