It's a good app that solved a problem I was having, but there's a big issue with it: when I clear the apps in the Recent Apps screen, the app and the DNS that works via VPN stop working and can't continue running in the background. For your information, this problem occurs on Xiaomi Redmi phones. I don't know if it appears on other devices, but this thing bothers me a lot. I hope you Adguard team fix the problem as soon as possible. Thank you. Edited

Hello! We are working on a solution to add a background process for the AdGuard DNS app on Android so it can stay active even when swiped away. For now, please keep the app in the recent apps list without closing it. And if you have any questions, feel free to contact us at
[email protected].

Installs and configures relatively painlessly using a combination of your AdGuard DNS dashboard and a QR code. The problem I always seem to have with DNS blocker apps like this are they're implemented as a passthrough VPN. One other issue I noticed, now that I'm giving it a second try, is that the app seems to exit overnight. I have it set up for unrestricted battery use, but for some reason it exits, reverting my DNS resolution back to "Automatic" (Cloudflare via Google). Edited

Hello,
It is indeed a local-VPN-based solution and unfortunately there's no way around it on Android.
Regarding IPv6, could you please contact us at
[email protected] and provide more details about that?

Just use Androids custom DNS settings. I've allowed background app usage and configured Android to not kill the app in the background and yet multiple times per day I pick up my phone and it needs to be turned back on. The VPN style configuration is too inconvenient and unreliable.

Hello! The AdGuard DNS app doesn’t have a background service, so please don’t close it — just keep it in recent apps to maintain filtering. And the VPN-style configuration is currently the only working method for DNS filtering on Android. If you have any questions, feel free to write to
[email protected].

Update: I understand your response. However Android private DNS has a flaw many times I have no internet. Adguard app via a local VPN works much better. I am a Adguard DNS (server) user which works extremely well in my home network. Edited

We're glad to hear you love our products. And you're right saying AdGuard Ad Blocker app is much more flexible in this terms. Maybe, we'll consider such features in AdGuard DNS one day.

Please implement permanent notification or something, so accidental closing or aggressive battery saving os like hyperos doesn't force close the app.

Hello! The AdGuard DNS app doesn’t have a background service, so please don’t close it — just keep it in recent apps to maintain filtering. And right now we're looking for a solution to make the app run in the background, so the Android system can't disable it.
