About Spirit Island

In the most distant reaches of the world, magic still exists, embodied by spirits of the land, of the sky, and of every natural thing. As the great powers of Europe stretch their colonial empires further and further, they will inevitably lay claim to a place where spirits still hold power - and when ... read more

This app does an excellent job of translating the physical game to a digital form. Information is presented clearly despite the limited room available on a phone screen, and I can't remember the last time the game misinterpreted my touches despite my big fingers. The devs are also quick to address bugs and issues. The only thing stopping me from 5 stars is the lack of options in quick play. I'd like to be able to disable scenarios or thematic boards while still getting a random setup. Edited

Pretty good port of the board game to digital. Love that it runs all the mechanics automatically. I do think the monthly subscription is a pretty good deal despite all the pricing complaints. Unfortunately, offline play doesn't work reliably and there's a bug that forces you to play with the expansion even when it's turned off. So unsubscribing until those are fixed. Edit -- new update seems to have resolved the previous issues and working much better now. Edited

The automation makes it markedly easier for new players to get into the game and its probably the best way to learn. I wish there was a way to back out of a game you just started without it automatically counting as a loss, though. If you accidentally pick a spirit you dislike or start a game you've lost before you started (France 6 paired with Blitz for example) there's no way to just reset without it counting as a loss. It is very much a fantastic way to learn and get into this game, though.

I got this game specifically so that I could play on an overseas trip. However, I didn't realize that it doesn't actually have an offline mode. With the $2/month subscription method, it locks you out without internet connection, which means I was extremely disappointed when I tried to play it. As other reviews have suggested, please make it like Spotify where it gives you 4 weeks of playing offline with full access before locking you out. I don't even know if buying it outright fixes this issue

The only negative here is the price. It is a lot, but the content you get for that is a LOT as well. If you like the game, it has pretty unlimited replayability. The implementation on smaller screens is pretty good. I can play it on my phone without much problem, but find it easier on the eyes to play on bluestacks or a tablet. It is great to have the option to play it on the phone though and it is very playable. Just got the physical game as well and I find that a few rounds of pass and play with a tablet at the table can help to teach it to video game oriented people. I wish tracking elemental symbols was this easy on the boardgame! On the flip side, I still prefer the physical game when I have time. It is easier to keep an eye on everything at once, and I don't have the cards memorized yet. That is my one complaint with the UI is that best I can tell it takes a few clicks to view my whole hand of cards at once. I wish I could drag up from the bottom to pull up a tray of enlarged cards. Great implementation of a really fun game!
