The game is kind of addicti the charactersve, but I recommend spending time tracing the characters to really learn them before playing the game. It's a fantastic tool for learning the Hanzi characters, and I like that I can switch between traditional and simplified (Mandarin), as well as between typed and calligraphy characters. I think the developers should consider running the game in a manner like flash cards (no points) as a practice just to learn the meanings of each character.

Trainchinese, this is a useful app. I have some requests that would make it even more useful for learning characters. 1. Please don't scroll the pinyin and definitions, especially in practice. 2. When pausing the game, please don't cover the pinyin and definitions with the tips message box (I want to pause so that I can look at those!). 3. Please permit user to turn off music and sound effects, yet still play the pronunciation. 4. Please don't darken the screen during practice. I can see how that might enhance the excitement of the game but it's detrimental during practice. If the paid version already does these things, I will purchase; if not, I will just use the free version.

Excellent app. Only slight negatives: When writing, no sound on last stroke. So far, have found 過 is not in the traditional set of characters. Also 這 is not quite written how it looks (written how it looks here, in app uses other style). Can't practice traditional and simplified at the same time even though they show in the same list (just greyed out). Lady pronouncing the characters seems to have a Shanghai accent (would be great to choose other accents like Beijing or Taiwan).

5 stars because this is an amazing utility for improving your speed for writing Chinese. -1 star because at the outset of each trial, the definition of the word is scrolling versus just static at top or bottom of the screen. Due to the scrolling, you can't learn the meaning of the words your writing unless you write less quickly... And if you write less quickly, you lose. So the learning experience is thereby negated slightly. Edited

Hi Justin—since this review we've updated the app and word definitions no longer scroll by themselves. Thanks to you and others who provided feedback on that: your input was important to the app redesign!

I think this is the best app out there for studying the hanzi. I bought the two upgrades (unlocked all characters and brush font). It's not perfect but it's good. I think they could take some notes from "Kanji Study" by Chase Colburn. Suggested improvements would be ways to import/export characters from a text file, updating to HSK 3.0, sorting custom lists, and an option to practice a given character until perfect.

Hi Ryan, thanks for the text file suggestion! We'll include this in the next update, coming in about a week. It'll be an extension of the existing "import" feature (that currently is only for pack files). Regarding HSK 3.0—you should be seeing that already. If it doesn't match what you expect, please email [email protected] and we'll try to help!
