nostalgia trip! I saw this on the app store and was gripped with indecision over if I should buy it or not. but then I remembered a young princess once said to me, "but thou must!" and who am I to deny princess Gwaelin? The remake is pretty, but just like the original, it's a short game. I'm not a fan of the clunky controls, or no return except to the castle, but I guess they wanted to keep those canon annoyances intact. at least they added quick-save. little QoL things would be great. Fine for what it is, however the settings are minimal, only allowing you to move the onscreen controls placement and not allowing you to change graphics settings. You can't change the controls if you have a physical controller, you can't even flip the screen to make the gameplay vertical instead of horizontal. It's a shame because it looks like they put some effort into this one, but I just wish they did more quality of life improvements. As it stands, it's a pretty ok port with nice redesigns. Edited

I've never played the dragon quest series, this was my first playthrough. Just a game I decided to get while traveling. Simple turn based dungeon crawler. Similar to final fantasy games . Not too much thought into the gear, story was simple. I've beat the game and gone on to DQ2 which is this game, improved and story continued. Looking forward to playing all the games.

I have many fond memories of playing this game on the NES so it's awesome that you can get much of the original experience in a mobile app. First off, this game just works: no ads, no account to set up. You start the game and play from start to finish. The controls have some nice quality of life improvements over the original. The dialogue is in a take middle English style true to the original, and its otherwise a joyfully simple RPG.

I first got addicted to the Dragon Quest games with VIII on the Wii. I had been trying to find the first one for years, so I was pretty stoked to see this one. Alas, as others have stated, the menu button doesn't function, you just move right :'( Update; It's fixed and perfect! Thank you for my happy place!
