Great if you don't care about the past. Ghastly if you do. Signal can automatically save an encrypted log of your chats locally—Android only! You need something else to move it off-site & find somewhere "safe" (!?) to save its long random encryption key. Worse: it's impossible to transfer your history between Android and iOS! Worse: the backup file grows forever—incremental backup is impossible. The developers arrogantly regard these problems as irrelevant? Not suitable for long-term use :(

The app itself is fine and works the way it should. However, it has severe limitations with data backup and image handling - if you enable data backups to Google drive for example, it backs up the entire history as one huge file, and fills up all your storage space by moving each previous backup to the trash. Instead, it should perform incremental backups. Also, sent and received images do not have the option of being saved to the phone gallery automatically. At least give us the option! Edited

Safe and secure messaging that EVERYONE should have installed. There is a reason it is the gold standard for encrypted E2E messaging. You may not get full fledge features and novelty things that you get from the open and less secure services (like telegram). But you do get a solid and usable messaging system that is 100% fully encrypted and able to keep your conversations and interactions private from outside snoopers, beat it government or data stealing corporations or other nefarious people.

It's encrypted end-to-end by default. It's free (made by a nonprofit). It's not owned by FB, G, or any other big ad pusher. And it does text, voice, and video. (Missing feature: "Mark as Unread"; I find I often take a quick peek at a message and find that it requires a lengthy reply that I didn't have time to write at the moment, but then forget to come back to it until much later.) Great connecting app. Working well for what I need. We use this as the primary messaging app for church. It works great for forming and managing groups. You can easily make new groups, have someone leave the group, change several people if you want. Theie safety privacy concerns are great, but it does make backups a little bit more complicated. I just changed phones recently & I will say that the process of moving over to a new phone has gotten easier. M conversations moved over with me Edited
