Not 5 stars because of controls and lack of customization for basically anything. Other reviews say the controls make it unplayable, but I strongly disagree. Yes, the controls should be better, but my current play through is still beyond enjoyable. Also it runs nearly PERFECT on my Huawei mate 20 lite(slightly above average speed phone). Only 2 crashes in the time I got hero to level 35(30+hrs of gameplay).

While lacking the orchestral music and voice acting of the PS2 release, Dragon Quest VIII is an amazing game in whatever form you can play it. This port looks great and has quality-of-life upgrades over the original--including automatic maps, quick- and auto-saves, and an instant alchemy pot--which arguably make it more fun than the PS2 version. Not a bad way to play at all if you don't have a Nintendo 3DS. The framerate does lag at times on Android, but I didn't notice it much. Recommend! Edited

The touch controls for this game are frustrating at the best of times. Also... theres an INSANE bug once you unlock the casino at Baccarat that freezes the touch controls anytime you make more than 5 bets on the roulette table. Making some of the best equipment for end game almost not worth the effort. The fact that it's been out for this long and the bug still isn't fixed tells you all you need to know. This game, as it stands, is NOT WORTH 20 DOLLARS. Save your money. They don't deserve it.

As someone who never got to play the original version of this game, I appreciate being able to play it on my phone. However, this port is rough around the edges. The camera can be overly sensitive at times, and as a result movement is a bit clunky. The menus for combat, item shops, etc. are functional, but a bit bland-looking, and apparently some content is outright missing. If you haven't played the original and can't get an older copy, it's fine, but returning players will be disappointed. Edited

Probably the worst port of any game I've ever played. Nonetheless, one of the best games I've ever played. Square Enix would do good to add the voice acting back, add controller support, and let you customize graphics at least a little bit. Playable at best. Wonderful game though. (Also add the damn 3DS port features!!)
