Well I get the concept. But the execution is disastrous and after quite a few years of the system being in place and numerous negative reviews there's still no improvement. The app still cannot be used if one doesn't own a swiss phone number, great for tourists and internationals isn't it? And if you manage to get into the system you'll still randomly get disconnected at any point of the journey. Some ICE or IR aren't even detected by the system at all. From CFF, disappointing

If SBB FreeSurf is still not working properly for you, please contact us at www.sbb.ch/en/freesurf so that we can analyse your case. Travelers from abroad can surf the web free of charge on the train with a SIM card from a participating provider. Thanks to eSIM and DUAL-SIM, this is comparatively easy. All information at www.sbb.ch/en/freesurf.

This is one of the most swiss solution I've seen in a while : Ridiculously over-complicated while technologically unsound. App needs Bluetooth plus location plus data usage. You'd better not forget your charger.... It's completely asinine. Tailored to one use case. It excludes anyone with a laptop, a mobile device running a less popular os and tablets without a sim card. You'd be better off doing nothing. On the bright side, the app works well. Edited

Yes, the new free internet on the train works as a combination of beacon wireless technology, Bluetooth and the SBB FreeSurf app. The connection is via GSM and not WiFi, as this offers better quality. We will address the weaknesses identified in the test for a later rollout.

Utterly terrible! Many have pointed out how useless this app is, and how many problems would be solved by simply offering a WiFi hotspot. SBB claims their solution provides a better service and experience. How so? By still being charged for data by Salt despite using the app? Or is it by having to reactivate the connection every ten minutes, because I "left the Free Surf Zone", yet still sitting in the train en route to Zurich? It's broken beyond repair. Just install WiFi, ffs!

Salt is not ready for prepaid yet. To get a solution, you may contact Salt. Do you have a Chinese device? If yes, you find tips & tricks on our website: www.sbb.ch/freesurf (at the end of the FAQ). This can ensure the stability of the connection. And yes, FreeSurf brings a better stability at lower costs than it would be the case with WiFi.

Why even bother trying? Didn't expect it to work and, oh what a surprize, it didn't work! C'mon we have working WiFi in United Airlines airplanes, thousands of feet over the ocean and it aint possible to get a working internet connection on Swiss trains?! Not even to mention that IF the app worked, laptops, tablets, older phones, etc etc. wouldn't be able to use it. Even the german DB has it. And that's only one of the downsides of swiss trains.... Update: Actually seems to work...👍 Edited

The app is soo poorly optimized for Android its giving me a headache each time i use it. The app kicks me out every 4-5 minutes and i have to stop the app running in the background and repeat. While on IPhone the app works flawlessly. And yes i do have a high end phone and the latest Android update.
