I had to download this app because the ways I used to open the assistant manually with my thumb have been gone away with. Recently I have to tap this assistant app and then tap the microphone again first before it listens. it was never like that. I refuse to use Gemini. Google voice to text and Gboard mic have gone so downhill it gets almost every other word wrong. it still can't spell my kid's names correctly and there's still no way to force it to on Samsung devices. Going back in time here

Like others have described, the assistant has become less and less functional over time. When I drive, I say "hey Google"and ask it a command. It pops up, listens, acknowledges my response, then does nothing. this happens in my car, on my phone, outside of driving. I have also experienced the "unlock device first" issue. Google used to have a great ecosystem and apps, but you can't live in a house where the manager comes in and keeps changing your furniture (and your locks). Edited

11/27/24: There is no way to shut off the screen prompt for quick phrases without disabling the quick phrase. I love using "stop/snooze" for alarms/timers & "answer/decline" for incoming phone calls. I hate that the prompt completely covers up the caller's name. It should be possible to disable the onscreen prompt. Also, the email listed in the app store is disabled. 3/19/26: Every time you use the voice assistant, it prompts Gemini. If I wanted the AI, I'd use it. I don't. Leave it alone. Edited

Fairly useful. Not perfect, but at least you can opt out of generative AI. My problem is that it keeps unselecting itself as my default assistant, even though I am using a Google pixel phone. Soon after fixing it, the app complains about not being the default and refuses to work, prompting me to change it in settings. In settings, "default assistant" is listed as set to "none," but when I enter to change it, it is still set as Google. I must then manually set it to none and back for it to work.

The app is getting worse and worse with Android Auto. I try to call someone whom I call all the time through voice command. Now, it doesn't understand who I want to call and offers people whom I never call. Before the latest update, I could say, "Planet Fitness", and it would give me locations of ones nearby. Now it tries to play some band on Spotify. I used to find the assistant extremely helpful while driving. Now it's flat out frustrating.
